What to see in Kemer
Aspendos is renowned throughout the world for its magnificent ancient amphitheater. It was designed during the 2nd century A.D. by the architect Zeno, son of Theodore.
The theatre is in excellent condition thanks to the top quality of the calcareous stone and to the fact that the Seljuks turned it into a palace, reinforcing the entire north wing with bricks.
The theatre at Aspendos is also famous for its magnificent acoustics. Even the slightest sound made at the centre of the stage can be easily heard as far as the uppermost galleries.
Each year thousands of foreign and local tourists flock in to Aspendos in order to see this magnificent ancient building , known as one of the best preserved antique theatres in the world, with many original features of the building remaining intact.
It has being used for various activities and festivals for many years, among which the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival is the most famous one.
It is organized by the Turkish State Opera and Ballet Directorate since 1994 during June and July annually
From the first day of this festival, every year, two thousand year old ancient Roman Theatre of Aspendos hosts world wide known opera and ballet companies, conductors and artists.
After so many years of respect, Aspendos Festival was accepted to the European Festivals Association(EFA), on 2003 as one of the most respectable open air festivals of classical music. "Independent Newspaper" of UK ranked the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival as 5th among ten similar festivals
